Buying from China should be straightforward — but for most overseas buyers, it's anything but. Here's where things go wrong, and how I fix them.
You're based in Africa or the Middle East. Flying to China to visit factories means expensive return flights, visa applications, hotel costs, and at least a week away from your business — just to verify one or two suppliers. And if you can't fly? You're left trusting a catalogue and a polished English email. You found suppliers on Alibaba, LinkedIn or at trade shows, but you still can't tell who's a real factory and who's a trading company adding a 20–30% markup. Every supplier claims "10 years of experience." Once money changes hands, the product often doesn't match what was promised.
You're 8,000 km away. You simply cannot jump on a plane every time you need to verify a shipment — the ticket alone costs more than the inspection service ever would. So you rely on photos the factory sends you. Then 20 pallets arrive: wrong specs, damaged panels, missing certifications. Returning goods to China from Africa or the Middle East is a logistical nightmare and an enormous cost. By the time you discover the problem, the factory is unreachable and your project is weeks behind schedule. There was no one on the ground to stop it before it shipped.
